The X6 F16 in 2017 was in its fourth year as the second generation, a sports activity coupe made at Greer. It combined an SUV's ground clearance and all wheel drive with the sloping roof of a coupe, in a car that was slightly larger than the first generation. Prior to the release of the X7, the X6 had been among the larger BMW SUVs. The X6 sat in the BMW range below the future X7, which was to be launched in 2018 and 2019.
