The F87 M2 went on sale in 2016, available only as a two door coupe, as the successor to the 1 Series M Coupe that had been replaced by the 2 Series range. Some changes became available to the ordinary 2 Series from the summer of 2016. The M2 was powered by the N55 turbocharged six cylinder engine, and was seen as a spiritual successor to the E30 M3. The M2 coupe was sold alongside the 2 Series coupe and convertible, and was the top model of the family.
