Production of the RX-8 rotary engine ended on 21 June 2012, followed by the end of assembly on 22 June at Mazda's Ujina plant in Hiroshima, after 192,094 units since 2003. Demand for the Spirit R was so high that Mazda extended production by 1,000 units in April, to about 2,000. The RX-8 was discontinued without a successor, and with it the era of the purely combustion driven rotary engine in a production car ended. The rear freestyle doors open opposite to the front doors.
