The CX-5 went on sale in Japan in February 2012 after production began in January at the Ujina plant in Hiroshima, and it won the 2012 to 2013 Car of the Year Japan award. Its sales in Japan were eight times higher than forecast in the first month, with the 2.2 liter Skyactiv-D diesel taking 73 percent. Ujina output was set to rise to 240,000 a year in July, and Malaysia and Australia received the car that year. It was Mazda's first model to use the Kodo design language and the first fully developed with the Skyactiv technologies.
