In March 2012 Mazda announced that this would be the last generation of in house designed Bongo vans and trucks, with the company withdrawing from commercial vehicle production to focus on fuel efficient passenger cars. In June 2012 a minor safety update was made, with the rear decal renewed and the Mazda decal deleted on the van. It also formed the basis for the long running Kia Bongo range. The Bongo was also known as the Ford Econovan and Eunos Cargo, and it has been built with rear, middle and front mounted engines.
