The Mustang Cobra Jet of 2012 was built to the same design as the GT500 but with wider tires and a bigger engine, and was sold only to professional drag racers, without a VIN, which made it impossible to register as a road car. The street cars kept the 3.7 liter V6 and the 5.0 liter V8 introduced for 2011, and a Boss 302 Laguna Seca edition was available. The 2011 engine changes remained in place: a 3.7 liter V6 rated at 305 horsepower and a six speed manual as standard.
