The Explorer Sport was announced on 28 March 2012 as an option for the 2013 model year. The Sport trim added blackened exterior treatments, a stiffened chassis and suspension, larger brakes and the 3.5 liter twin turbo EcoBoost V6 rated at 365 horsepower. The standard Explorer of the 2012 model year remained a unibody SUV on the D4 platform built at Chicago with a six speed automatic. The Explorer Sport was thus a 2013 model.
