A five seat variant of the X6 was available for the 2012 model year onwards, adding a rear middle seat to the original four seat layout, and in 2012 a new high performance version of the diesel engine was added to the range. The X6 continued to be made at BMW's Greer plant in South Carolina, sharing its platform with the X5. The change made the X6 more practical for families who had found the earlier car limited to four.
