Since 2011 the X6 has been optionally available with five seats instead of four, the original layout having been a four seater designed as a coupe style crossover. The X6 was significantly lower than the X5 and slightly longer and wider, and in 2011 it was in its fourth year on the market, built alongside the X5 at Greer. It was therefore a five seat crossover for the first time from the 2012 model year onwards, while earlier cars seated four.
