The Lancer Evolution X became available for purchase in the United States in October 2008, and a detuned and cheaper version of the Evolution X was announced at the 2008 North American International Auto Show. The 2008 model year was the first of the ninth generation Lancer in North America, which had gone on sale in March 2007 with the RISE safety body, and over six million Lancers had been sold since 1973. It was sold in Japan as the Galant Fortis and in Taiwan as the Lancer Fortis.
