For the 2006 model year the fascia was changed again from a bridged fascia to one with an open vent, after Mitsubishi received complaints from owners about its similarity to another car. It was the last year of the eighth generation before the new Lancer, the ninth, shown in 2007, and this series was still sold in Japan for years alongside the ninth, which was the Galant Fortis there. The Lancer Evolution grew out of the Lancer line for rally homologation.
