After meeting its sales projections at its launch the Excursion saw demand fall, in part because of the energy crisis of the 2000s, though its annual production capacity was 70,000. By 2004 it was a niche heavy duty SUV offered with V8, V10 and 6.0 litre diesel engines, all with automatic transmissions. The Excursion was a heavy duty Ford sport utility vehicle built on the Super Duty truck chassis. Ford made it at its Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville alongside the F-Series Super Duty.
