Although the Mazda 121, a rebadged Ford Fiesta, was on sale in South Africa, demand was judged too low for a Mazda rebadged Bantam to be built. The Bantam of 2004 was the Ford only coupe utility, available as a basic fleet model, the XL and the XLT. The Bantam was a coupe utility pickup that Ford produced in South Africa for the South African market. It was the small half ton pickup known there as a bakkie, sold beside the Mazda Rustler.
