In July 2003 the facelifted X5 was presented for the 2004 model year, and it was shown at the IAA in September, with new headlights, a few new exterior colours, a new four wheel drive system and upgraded engines. BMW invented the xDrive system, shared with the X3, for the X5. Sales began in September 2003, and production at Spartanburg started on 26 September. The headlights received the corona rings in keeping with other BMW models of the time.
