In 2002 the Zetec trim of the Galaxy, despite its name, was not offered with a Zetec engine. It came with the Volkswagen supplied 1.9 TDI diesel, while Ford's own 2.3 litre petrol was also available. Manual gearboxes on every engine were five speed VXT75 units, a modified Ford design. The Galaxy was a seven seat people carrier that Ford built for the European market, sharing its platform with the Mondeo in its later forms.
