Production of the Town Box Wide ended in August 2001, just over two years after it was introduced, with just under 4,300 examples sold in Japan and another 3,300 exported to Malaysia for assembly by Proton. The Town Box Wide had not been a success. The standard Town Box of 2001 went on, in the SX, LX and turbocharged RX models, with a three cylinder 3G83 or a four cylinder 4A30. The first generation Town Box was also sold in Japan as the Nissan Clipper Rio.
