NHTSA crash test ratings exist for the 2001 Galant without side airbags, the sixth year of the eighth generation, built at Normal, Illinois, for North America. The Galant was a mid size sedan with a 2.4 liter four or 3.0 liter V6, front wheel drive and four speed automatic transmission, and it was facelifted for the 2002 model year after one more year. The name Galant comes from the French word for chivalrous. The Galant evolved from a compact sedan into a mid-size car over its life.
