In 2001 the Excursion was sold in the XL trim, chiefly to fleets, the XLT trim as the main retail model, and the Limited at the top, with eight or nine seats and a vertical spare tire in the cargo area. It had a three way rear door with a top hinged window and split side hinged doors. Ford made it at its Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville alongside the F-Series Super Duty. The Excursion was a heavy duty Ford sport utility vehicle built on the Super Duty truck chassis.
