The M3 convertible joined the coupe in April 2001, and in September the sedan and Touring received a facelift for the 2002 model year, with xenon headlights offered. BMW also built ten M3 GTR Strassen Version cars this year, so that the M3 GTR race car could compete in the American Le Mans Series. The E46 was at the height of its popularity. The M3 GTR road cars were built in a run of just ten. Single xenon headlights were offered that year.
