The third generation Eclipse of 2000 shared an extended wheelbase variant of its platform with the Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Stratus. The Eclipse RS was the base model with a 154 horsepower 2.4 liter 16 valve SOHC 4G64 engine, and the 3.0 liter V6 used in the GT and GT Spyder produced 205 horsepower to federal specifications from 2000 to 2001. The Eagle Talon had ended, and the Eclipse was built in Illinois. The Mitsubishi Eclipse was named after an unbeaten 18th century English racehorse that won 18 races in a row.
