For 2000 the Mountaineer was the third best selling Mercury, behind the Sable and the Grand Marquis. It was the first Mercury SUV, a mid size luxury sport utility vehicle sold above the Explorer, with a 5.0 liter V8 or a 4.0 liter SOHC V6, and a concept vehicle for the next generation was shown at the 2000 Los Angeles show. It was marketed above the Explorer and between the Lincoln Navigator and the Mercury Villager. The Mountaineer was the first Mercury SUV and the divisional counterpart of the Ford Explorer.
