In 1999 the limited edition of the Colt hatchback gained a chrome trimmed grille insert from the Japanese market Mirage Modarc. The production of the model year 1999 Mirage sedans was greatly lowered due to the large demand for the Eclipse, with only 4,783 Mirage DE units produced. All entry level performance models retained the older 175 PS 1.6 liter MIVEC engine. The Mirage hatchback models of 1978 to 2003 were classed as subcompact cars, while the sedan and wagon, sold as the Lancer, were compact.
