Series 8, the final series, came in 1998 and was sold only in the Japanese market, with the #5 model beginning in December 1998. It had more efficient turbochargers, a redesigned front fascia for better cooling, and new seats, steering wheel and instruments. In Britain the newly introduced SVA scheme created a surge of interest in used FDs, and Pettit Racing won the GT2 Road Racing Championship in an RX-7. Mazda organised an internal design competition between its four design studios for the shape of the car.
