The Navigator was launched on 1 July 1997 for the 1998 model year, and in its first calendar year of sales it contributed to Lincoln overtaking perennial rival Cadillac in annual sales volume, an event not seen in recent decades. Published figures at first showed Cadillac ahead by a scant 222 vehicles after a surge in Escalade sales in December 1998, but an audit led to a retraction and apology in May 1999. The first generation was a full size body on frame SUV, mechanically related to the Expedition and the 1997 F-Series.
