Mark VIII production ended with the 1998 model year, the final generation of the Mark series, and all 1998 models had the reinforced 4R70W automatic transmission. The new four door mid size Lincoln LS, introduced in June 1999 as a 2000 model, served as its replacement. The Mark series has not been replaced since, though Lincoln briefly revived the Continental as a premium sedan from 2017 to 2020. The Mark VIII was the exclusive model of the Ford FN10 chassis, an evolution of the MN12 platform developed for the 1989 Thunderbird and Cougar.
