The E38 facelift, known as Life Cycle Impulse, was introduced for the 1999 model year and production of the new cars began in September 1998. It carried the third generation 7 Series forward with new details and a wider range of engines. The 1998 model year thus saw the E38 at its mid life change. The cars made from September 1998 were called 1999 model year cars, and so belonged to the next year of the model's record, with the 1998 cars the last of the unrefreshed design.
