Production of the Avensis started in October 1997 at the Burnaston factory in Derby, and the car was launched at the end of the year as the successor to the Carina E. It was based on the platform and engines of its predecessor, and the Burnaston plant also began producing the five door Corolla at the same time. This was the first model year of the Toyota Avensis (first generation, T220), 1997 to 2002, the first generation covered for the Toyota Avensis; the 1998 model year follows it. Model year pages for the Toyota Avensis run from 1997 to 2018.
