The redesigned 1997 Silhouette was built at Doraville Assembly like other U body based minivans, and the first Silhouettes were assembled in August 1996. The base model, only offered for 1997, was the only one to offer a short wheelbase, with a driver side sliding door only optional. The Silhouette shared its design with the Chevrolet Venture and the Pontiac Trans Sport. The 1997 Silhouette was the first of the second generation, a minivan on the redesigned U body.
