In the United States the fifth generation Mirage arrived for the 1997 model year and was again available in sedan and coupe versions. In 1997 the Limited Saloon and GSR coupe variants were added to the lineup, and in July 1997 a classically styled version of the Mirage hatchback became available in Japan, called the Mirage Modarc. In Japan the Mirage was sold at a retail chain called Car Plaza. The Mirage hatchback models of 1978 to 2003 were classed as subcompact cars, while the sedan and wagon, sold as the Lancer, were compact.
