In September 1997 the 2.0 liter V6 of the Legnum was dropped and the ceiling of the standard roof cars was changed from vinyl to cloth, and a sporty 1.8 liter Viento with the exterior of the VR-4 was added. The Legnum was sold at the two dealer chains of Mitsubishi, the Galant stores and the Car Plaza, so the name Galant was not used, though it was the Galant Estate in North America and Oceania. The 4G93 GDI engine of the Legnum was the first in the world to make ultra lean combustion possible with gasoline direct injection.
