In 1997 the seventh generation Lancer was in its third year, a cost saving rebadge of the Mirage sedan with minor cosmetic tweaks, and the Lancer Evolution IV was a World Rally Championship winning car built from it, with the 4G63T turbocharged 1997 cc four cylinder engine. The Lancer was sold as a sedan and as a wagon, and in Australia and the Philippines as the Asti coupe. Between its introduction in 1973 and 2008 over six million Lancers were sold.
