The 1997 Acura EL launched as a four-door-only replacement for the weak-selling Canadian Integra sedan. It was a lightly altered Civic made by Honda Canada, with a moonroof, CD player and a 127 horsepower 1.6 litre VTEC engine, and it was close to the American Civic EX sedan, which was not sold in Canada. In its first full year the EL made up half of Acura Canada's new-vehicle sales, and it was the brand's best seller there for the next several years, with the Integra sedan it replaced having sold only in tiny numbers.
