In the 1996 Dakar Rally a pair of Land Cruisers finished first and second in the unmodified production class, and North American and British models adopted anti lock brakes and airbags as standard equipment. The Land Cruiser was withdrawn from Canada this year and from then on sold there only as the Lexus LX. It was model year 6 of 7 in the Toyota Land Cruiser (80 series, J80), 1990 to 1997, coming after the 1995 model year and before the 1997 model year.
