For 1996 the backs of the front seats were recessed, improving rear seat leg room, rear seat cushions lowered for headroom, and split rear seats became available on all models. A leather finished steering wheel was optional on the Mercury Mystique, and the powertrain control module changed to the newer EEC V to be OBD II compliant. The Mystique was produced in GS and LS trims with a Sport option package. It was manufactured at Kansas City Assembly in Claycomo, Missouri.
