The 1996 Cherokee was the last year of the first long phase of the XJ before a facelift in 1997. It continued as a two or four door compact SUV with rear or four wheel drive, and as the best selling Jeep alongside the Grand Cherokee. The XJ Cherokee had been on sale in the United States since the 1984 model year and would be freshened in 1997, with the 4.0 liter six cylinder as its top engine and the 2.5 liter four cylinder as the base.
