European Cherokee XJ models introduced a 2.5 liter petrol engine and a 2.5 liter VM Motori turbodiesel in 1995, expanding their powertrain options beyond the earlier 2.1 liter diesel. The Cherokee was exported widely and made in China as well as in Toledo. The 2.5 liter VM Motori turbodiesel and a 2.5 liter petrol engine gave the Cherokee more powertrain choices in Europe, where earlier XJs had used a 2.1 liter diesel, and the XJ was also built in China.
