For the 1996 model year Ford introduced a new Class 4 medium duty variant of the Econoline, sold only as a cutaway van chassis or a cab chassis, called the E Super Duty. It was made with heavier duty components than the existing Econoline 350, like the F Super Duty sold at the same time. The E Series was Ford's full size van, sold as the Econoline and Club Wagon and as a cutaway chassis. It was the best selling full size van in the United States from 1980 until the Transit replaced the vans in 2014.
