In 1996 the E38 was in its second model year, produced in short iL and long variants with petrol and turbodiesel straight six, V8 and the V12 flagship. The design of the 7 Series, approved in February 1991, was by now an accepted icon of the luxury saloon class, and a model that would feature in the James Bond film of the following year. The E38 had been unveiled in February 1994 as a 1995 model year car, and 1996 saw it fully established in its markets.
