In 1996 the E36 M3 became the first 3 Series available with a six speed manual gearbox, though American cars kept the five speed. The M44 four cylinder engine replaced the M42 this year, and a modified version of the E36 platform was used for the Z3 roadster and coupe made from 1996 to 2002. Three E36 saloons were also delivered to Georgia State Patrol ahead of the Atlanta Olympics, which BMW sponsored.
