The Mitsubishi FTO was produced between 1994 and 2000. In October 1994 the pre facelift models arrived, with the inline engined GS as the base model with 14 inch wheels, the V6 GR with 15 inch wheels, and the V6 MIVEC engined GPX with 16 inch alloy wheels. The first appearance of the INVECS-II automatic transmission was at the launch of this model range. FTO stands for Fresh Touring Origination, and the name recalls the Galant FTO coupe of 1971, one of the company's first sports cars.
