The Tempo was discontinued in 1994 and replaced by the Contour for model year 1995, though the two door Tempo was not directly replaced. Over its run it had been the best selling new car in Canada in 1986 and the first American production car with an optional driver's airbag. In its last year it was sold in GL and LX trims as a coupe and sedan, powered by the 2.3 liter four or the optional 3.0 liter V6.
