Special edition appearance packages were offered including a retro Dias Classic, later available on the Sambar truck, influenced by the Subaru Vivio Bistro. The Sambar of 1993 was in its fourth year of the fifth generation. A Sambar Dias Classic appears in the manga Love Hina as Seta's van. The Sambar has used a rear engine, rear wheel drive layout with body on frame rather than unibody construction. Later generations used the water cooled engine from the Subaru Rex, Vivio and the Pleo.
