After the September 1992 facelift the Escort and Orion had a new 1.6 liter 16 valve Zetec engine of 90 horsepower in place of older units. South America, which had received the fifth generation in December 1992 from Brazil and Argentina, was built there by AutoLatina, a Volkswagen and Ford joint venture, and in October 1993 the Verona four door saloon joined the line up in those markets. Volkswagen sold related Pointer and Logus models using the same mechanics.
