By 1993 the E32 was nearing the end of its run, still produced with straight six, V8 and V12 engines, and the E38 pilot production models had begun in July 1993 ahead of the new car. The 7 Series gained more years as the car with the largest sales in the BMW range's flagship slot, with the long wheelbase versions the preferred option. The following February, in 1994, BMW would unveil the E38 as the successor of the E32.
