Driver's side airbags became an option midway through the 1992 model year and became standard in 1993. The Legacy LE Touring Wagon was sold in the United States from 1992 to 1994. Richard Burns was successful in numerous events with the car during 1992, and Ari Vatanen and Colin McRae paired up for Subaru's WRC effort that year. The Legacy also won the Alcan Winter Rally again in 1992. The Legacy introduced an entirely new flat four engine series, the EJ, which was quieter and more powerful than the earlier EA engine.
