In 1992 the E36 M3 was launched, built with a 3.0 liter S50 straight six rather than the four cylinder of the E30 M3, and unlike its predecessor it was not a homologation special. In late 1992 the M50TU engines gained single VANOS variable valve timing, which improved torque. Saloon, coupe and the new M3 were the available bodies this year. The M3 was produced in coupe, saloon and convertible bodies, and the car was built at Munich, Regensburg, Rosslyn and Spartanburg.
