The 1991 Acclaim kept the three trim levels it had been launched with and was sold as one of the badge engineered triplets with the Dodge Spirit and Chrysler LeBaron sedan. It had been characterized as the replacement for the smaller Reliant, although the Sundance of 1987 was closer in size. Options included a five speed manual and several automatics, among them the three speed TorqueFlite, which was the most popular with the throttle body and multi point injected four cylinder engines.
