Developed during the peak of Japan's bubble economy, the sixth generation Lancer, launched in 1991, marked a departure from previous iterations. It still shared a platform with the Mirage sedan but featured distinct sheet metal, making it the first standalone Lancer design since the second generation, with a conventional four window greenhouse instead of the Mirage's six window layout. This generation also spawned the Lancer Evolution I, II and III.
