For the 1991 model year the all wheel drive Tempo and Topaz and the Canadian market exclusive entry level Tempo L were discontinued. A revised body with eight headlamps was previewed late in 1991, and a redesigned Tempo was expected for 1993 or 1998. The Topaz continued as the GS, LS, XR5 and LTS, with the 2.3 liter engine as the base power. It was produced across several facilities in North America. The Topaz was the Mercury counterpart of the Ford Tempo, a compact car on the chassis of the Ford Escort.
