The Explorer was introduced in March 1990 as an early 1991 model, replacing the Bronco II and balancing off road ability with family use while keeping mechanical parts in common with the Ranger pickup. It was larger than the Bronco II by 12.6 inches in the three door and 22.4 inches in the five door. Its 4.0 liter Cologne V6 made 155 horsepower. The Mazda Navajo, a rebadged three door Explorer, became the first SUV to win Motor Trend's Truck of the Year in 1991.
